Marquel: Hey, what's up, my friend? Marquel Russell here. Welcome to this brand new episode of the School of Client Attraction. [01:03.7]

Today's episode is going to be a little bit different. I want to share with you the biggest thing I’ve learned from my therapist is actually going to make you more money. Yeah, some people are like, Oh, therapist? Some people will get weirded out by having therapy. But me, personally, I believe that entrepreneurs should have a coach and they should have a therapist. I'm telling you this. That is a powerful, powerful combination.

But what's that one biggest thing I’ve learned? The way I grew up, I always tell people that I'm very good at controlling my emotions, right? As I control my emotions, I basically numb myself out, especially in the environment I came up in and things of that nature. You learn that you’ve got to be tough, right? You shouldn't feel emotion, and if you feel your emotions or you share your feelings, you're actually soft, right? It’s just kind of what you learn. Most men learn, especially black men, right? I can't speak for other communities, but I can speak for ours, so I know what the program is.

What I learned from my therapist, though, is that it's actually not about controlling your emotions. It's about managing your reactions to your emotions. Acknowledging the emotion, naming it—whether you're sad, whether that made you angry, whether that made you frustrated or whatever, and not eluding that—and then just managing your reaction to it. When you get pissed off, you can pause. You can immediately react or you can give yourself three seconds, five seconds or step away from it for a minute and then react, or you can immediately react right up.

In business, you're dealing with a lot of emotions at one time, your own personal emotions, the emotions of your clients, the emotions of your team members, the emotions of the marketplace, whatever the case may be, emotions of your, quote-unquote, “competitors”, so you’ve got to manage your reactions to those emotions, because if you don't manage those reactions, they can because you to make dangerous decisions.

Whether you’re acting totally out of anger, totally out of emotion, totally out of sadness or whatever, that can lead you down the path where you're spending unnecessary money. You can blow everything. You can kill your whole business. You can create bad relationships with team members, say crazy things to your clients, team members, whatever the case might be, a very, very dangerous place to be. But if you understand this, this puts you in a powerful place because most people don't understand this. [03:03.8]
