Words have more power than you give them credit for. The difference between living a mediocre life and becoming stinkin’, filthy rich is in the words you use. The right words can make your wildest dreams come true. But the wrong ones will doom you to fail.

For example, if you want financial freedom, you have to know exactly how much money you need to make. But too often, we set broad goals without specific numbers. We don’t realize this makes it impossible to reach those goals – even if we work hard every day.

In this episode, I’m sharing the importance of the words you use. You’ll also discover how to use words to become happier, healthier, and richer than you ever thought possible.

Here Are The Show Highlights:

  • Why wanting to be rich and happy are surefire ways to end up broke and depressed (3:11)
  • How building your net worth stunts your wealth (even if every guru says it will make you rich) (5:33)
  • Why having $200 million in the bank doesn’t protect you from bankruptcy (and the only way to prevent losing all your cashola) (6:22)
  • The simple, yet difficult way to never let Shiny Object Syndrome manipulate you again (8:07)
  • Why setting broad goals guarantees you’ll never reach them (and the easy way to surpass even your wildest dreams) (11:29)
  • The weird way to improve your marriage, add a 0 to your bank account, and create freedom out of thin air by using nothing but words. (18:07)

Welcome to the “Making of a DM.” Words, they can make or break you if you understand what they actually mean. In today's episode, I'm going to share some in-depth insights for you to help you accomplish more and do it much quicker. So, with that said, let's get started.

Mark: Hey, there, it’s your host, Mark Evans DM. Thank you very much for being here. I'm in Ohio. You may hear it a little bit. I'm actually sitting, let me paint the picture here, I’m at the pad in Ohio. As I'm talking to you, hear this. That's the bar tap. I'm going to pour myself a beer. [01:05.3]

Over the weekend, it was my birthday. Turned the big 43. Came out with the new book, MEconomy. Then, as you know, Sunday was Father's Day, so I got to hang out as I always do with the kiddos and just kind of think about stuff—and, today, I want to share with you some stuff as I'm sitting in the cigar bar. I'm going to sit. I'm going to take a picture and send this to my guy that uploads the audio here, but I’ve got a pretty cool cigar bar that we had redone the whole basement when were in Florida and it's looking pretty cool. We’ve got the snack bar, big old refridge, got the cigar bar, big humidor, holds 3,000 sticks. Got the theater room and a kid's room, sauna, all that good stuff.

Anyway, I'm super excited to be here to share some stuff with you. I think I could bring some insights. As I'm sitting here pondering on ideas and thoughts of how to be valuable to you today for this podcast show, this may be a lot shorter than the average one, maybe 15, 20 minutes, and I’ll go as long as we need to because I want to make sure we talk about things that matter. [02:09.5]

I just want to go on the record again and say thank you, guys, so much for all your support. We sold many, many books over the weekend on the 19th and 20th, and even beyond, got a lot of cool replies from people, hundreds and hundreds of people have messaged me, and I just can't get back to everybody fast enough. If you're one of them, I appreciate you, and it's amazing.

Also getting some good feedback on the podcast show. A lot of people are sharing it, saying it's really hitting home, they're on the treadmill, it's great motivation, and all that stuff. Again, my agenda is simply here to help you. That's it. No more, no less. I have a lot of different companies I'm running all the time. Today was a crazy day. Me and my wife got to go out and drive around in the Drophead for an hour or so, pick up some cool stuff, hang out, just talk life and all that while the kids are here. [03:00.6]

Like I said, I’ve just been thinking about this more and more, and I want to share this with you guys because I think it's important that, as you're growing, you guys are paying attention to this, but everyone comes to me and I’m very weird on the words. Words are very powerful. What I mean by that is people are like, “Mark, I want to be rich.” Cool. What does that mean? They don't really know what it means. They just want to be rich. “I just want to be happy.” Rich and happy are two different things. What do you want? And asking that word or “Man, I'm not having a good day,” what does a good day look like? What does a bad day look like? What does a mediocre day look like? See, you start understanding the power of words, and by the way, if you're saying it out loud, I can only imagine what we say to ourselves, right?

In the book, MEconomy, the new book that just came out, my first chapter is about getting stupid filthy rich and I always have the people who are like, Man, money is everything, Mark. Okay, cool, who said it was? I said I want to get stupid filthy rich, not because money is everything—that's what you heard, by the way—but because I want to help a lot of great people. [04:07.4]

See, I understand what my words mean. I understand them 100% because I’ve thought-audited on that shit for many, many years. I've heard a lot of people like, Dude, I'm rich, and then they have fucking 10 grand in the bank. Homie, that's not rich. I don't care where you're from. $10,000 is not rich. I talked last week and this one guy was like, Dude, I'm all in in crypto. I was like, “All in”, meaning what? He's 20 gees. I'm like, That's all in, 20 grand? That's what I'm thinking, right?

See, the thing is, you're not all in if you're fucking pussyfooting around with $20,000. I'm not saying that might not be a big deal, but don't go around talking shit, saying, “I'm all in.” It's like, dude, I'm playing with 20 gees in the game. Different, right? All in and you’re playing with 20 gees.

By the way, it's the same thing, 20 grand is 20 grand, but these words hold so much different weight. Here's what my biggest fear is. This dickhead is out here saying all in. You hear “all in.” Therefore, you go all in, but “all in” to you might be 5 million. “All in” to that dipshit, he's in 20,000 when he has 100,000 in the bank. That's not all in. He's pussyfooting around. [05:14.0]

It's very delusional when people use these words like, “Yo, man, I'm rich,” or this is always a good one, “I'm worth $50 million.” Worth 50 million. What does that mean, you know what I mean? That's how much my properties have equity and blah, blah, blah. Dude, I don't care how much equity you’ve got. I care how much money you’ve got in the bank.

See, the thing is being equity-rich does not mean you're cash-rich. Trust me, I know and all my buddies in real estate know this is a hundred percent true. Everyone wants to talk about their net worth. Your net worth is if it's not liquid. Your net worth is cool to say out loud because it might be a big number, but it's pointless until you can actually use it and extract it. [06:00.1]

Not to say you might not look at it. The truth is, straight up, I've never looked at my net worth because my net worth has never driven me. You know what drives me? Cash flow. You know what drives me? Taking care of my team. You know what drives me? Taking care of my customers and clients. You know what drives me? Hiring great individuals to help grow companies. Net worth is bullshit if you are only looking at net worth.

By the way, I know many people that went BK that had 50, 60, 80, 200 million dollars net worth. I know many people who have done that. My net worth is not $200 million, but I’ve never gone BK. Everything I own is free and clear, which I'm very proud of, and I'm excited to see what I could do more with cash.

See, a lot of people are liquid. They're over leveraged that. They talk about the power of leverage. Cool, I like leverage. I don't hate it. It's just not what drives me. If I can't afford it today, I don't want it. That's just the way I roll. That's not right or wrong, by the way. [06:58.4]

See, the thing is words, the power of words. “Mark, I’m poor. Huh?” What does that mean? Right? What does poor mean to you? “Man, I'm having a bad day.” Huh. Dude, you want me to take you to Haiti? I'll show you a real fucking bad day. Quit being a wimp. Get to work. Let's go.

See, when you start putting words into perspective, “Man, I'm wealthy,” I can tell you right now, if you have 100 million in the bank and your family hates you, you're probably the least wealthy person I know. See, I want to understand the whole picture. I want to understand what wealth means to you. I want to understand what rich means to you. I want to understand what “I'm hungry. I'm all in” means to you, because these words mean different things to everybody.

I talk about MEconomy. When I say I want to be stupid, filthy rich, I'm talking hundreds of millions of dollars, if not billions. What's cool about this, what's cool about what I'm talking about is, if you know what you want—by the way, it's the last chapter—what the fuck do you really want? That's the question. [08:02.3]

Most people don't know the answer. They're like, Oh, yeah, man, I know what's going on. Oh, no you don't. If you don't know what you want, how do you know what's going on? How do you know if you don’t have shiny object syndrome issues? It's because you're not clear on what you really want. If you're too easily manipulated around environments and just toss money at shit to see what sticks, it’s just that you don't know what you want. I've been there. I get it.

But once you get super clear, it gives you a confidence. I'm actually getting ready to head over to my neighbor's house I just met and he's like, Hey, man, we're play bocce, older guys, sixties, and I'm going to go and hang out, take them a bottle of Caymus and say hello and welcome myself to the neighborhood, meet his buddies. He owns a pretty big company here in town, all over the country actually, and I'm going to go, hang out, and we're going to talk. I just listen. I observe.

Successful people typically talk about successful stuff. I can't imagine me going over there and then talking about politics this, politics that. Man, my taxes are going up or down, or whatever. These guys are talking about how they're making more money, where they're parking money, how they're growing their money, etc. Your words are powerful. [09:06.8]

I get to hang out with my niece. She came up and hung out with me actually on my birthday, late night, her and her boyfriend and her daughter, and I were sitting there talking, and she's just like, Man, no one likes me, oh, blah, blah, blah. I'm like, No one likes who? “So-and-so.” That's not no one. That's two people out of a thousand people that you know. See, the thing is she gets down on herself. She gets down on herself. She's younger, right, in their twenties. She's 20 years old. But she gets down on herself because she's like, No one likes me. You don't understand. Right?

Words. I want you to be very selective with your words. I want you, more importantly, if you use a word, understand the use of the word, what it means to you. If you want more confidence, say words with confidence, like, Yo, I'm fucking all in. That means you're all in. Not like, Well …I’ve kind of got 70,000 parked over here. I’ve got 20,000 here. I’ve got 150,000 here. Yeah, I'm going to put 10 grand and I'm all in. Dude, you're not all in. You're just saying it out loud to sound cool, but the reality is you're just lying to yourself, most importantly, and everyone else around you. [10:10.5]

What always scares me about this shit is other people are listening and watching you. They're paying attention. They're listening to your words. That's the world we live in, right? It'd be like, Oh, man, I have an amazing life, and three weeks later, they're getting a divorce. “Man, my business is crushing it.” Two months later, they and their partners are splitting up. They're going to BK because they've lost everything.

I'm not saying this couldn't happen using the words the right way, but just be careful. Be conscious of what words mean. When I say I'm rich, that might mean something different to you. When I say I'm happy, that might mean something different to you and I. When I say I'm fat, overweight, skinny, healthy, not healthy, all this stuff means something. What does it mean to you? That's all that matters, by the way, what it means to you. [11:01.2]

I know what this shit means to me. When I'm feeling like shit and I'm talking bad to myself, I'm saying words loosely, not very directly. “Oh, man, I’ve got to get my shit together.” It doesn't hold any weight. Therefore, I'm kind of lost. I kind of get in my misery, kind of hang out and have a little pity party for myself, right? The problem with pity parties is no one brings gifts, so why do it? Sometimes we like to do that to ourselves, right? But what do words mean to you?

“Mark, I want to help people.” Cool. What does that mean? “Mark, I want to just be financially free.” Awesome. What's your number? You understand I ask these questions from people pretty much every day and this is kind of usually what I get. “Oh, well, if I had 10,000, that'd be good.” Fuck, dude, if you had 10,000, you make 2,700 a month now. How the fuck if you had 10 grand now, why is that different? I'm talking about being financially free. You don't have a real number. Therefore, you're never going to get there.

It's like jumping in your car and saying, Yo, I’ll meet you at the restaurant. Cool. I'll see you in an hour. Fuck, what restaurant are we going to? You didn't tell me. I didn't tell you. We're just going to drive around and hope like hell we hit at the same restaurant and within an hour radius? [12:14.8]

See, the thing is you’ve got to point your brain in the right direction. You’ve got to understand what this means. You’ve got to know what the destination is, i.e. what the words mean. “Hey, Evans, I'm going to meet you over at the Hyde Park on the High Street at 6:00 p.m.” Done, on Saturday. See, when you're specific, you obviously know where you're going to end up at. Now, sometimes you might have to take a detour. You might hit a speed bump. You might have to replan the event for whatever reason. But at least I have a destination. At least I have a direction of where I'm going to do it.

“Dude, I want to be financially free.” Cool. What is that number? What is the number? It's very powerful when you become financially free. It happened for me at 27 years old. [13:00.8]

By the way, my number now today is way different than when I was 27. If I could give you any insights, if you're trying to become financially free, create a financially free opportunity where you're not just out here blowing money like crazy, but you have a real tight number, 3,200 a month, 6,000 a month, whatever the number is. You’ve got your house, car, electric, gas bill, whatever you’ve got, you’ve got that. You put these numbers down. Maybe you’ve got to cut back here and there, reduce to pour on the gas.

See, the cool thing about financial independence, financial freedom, is once you get financially free through passive income streams or active. I always say passive, but it's really a hybrid of active actions to get passive income, so really there's no such thing as passive income. You know that, right? A hundred percent passive, there's just no such thing. But there are massive opportunities with like Walmart automation which we do and different things, we partner with people all over the country, and we're able to create some decent passive income once it's set up and cranking. [13:59.7]

But, anyway, back to my story. If I can get you your 40 hours a week back that you're putting towards your job through understanding what your words mean and your actions mean and your implementation, and you start getting these results, you can own your life. You can own the world.

See, when you have a hundred percent of your day to go out and focus on building something bigger, with direction, of course you can really accomplish so much more than you've ever thought possible. See, that's what money buys. When I say I want to be stupid, filthy rich, I want to give hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars away, I want to be able to hang out with my family and not change my lifestyle at all.

I love my family life. I hang out with them every day, wake up, get to say good morning, kiss my kids good morning, kiss my wife goodnight, love you, sweet dreams when they're going to bed and all that. I'm here. I'm present. That, to me, is success on the family level.

Then I know I’ve built my companies around this, knowing that I can still build a company, right? As I'm talking to you, the family is upstairs. We're meeting a new teacher to possibly teach the kids here in Ohio while we're here. What we're doing is setting the stage. I want my kids to be literally bank smart, not just book smart, you know what I mean? I want this. [15:07.5]

We're growing. We're evolving. I want them to really have a fighting chance at accomplishing a lot in their life. Not just because of dad and mom, but because what mom and dad gave them, the opportunities. Not money, by the way, but knowledge. Knowledge, and we're here to do that daily. We're here to push them. We're here to prod them. We're here to put them in the right place.

I talked to my kids about words all the time. “Dad, you're being mean.” Cool. What does that mean? You don't like what I say to you? That's not being mean. Maybe you don't like it, but that's not mean. I’ll show you what mean is if you want to see what mean is, right? It's like understanding what words are.

As adults, sometimes we’ve just been thrown around with these words like it's nothing. I can be very clear with you guys. When I say I'm financially free, I'm very crystal clear on what that number is. When I say I'm building a company and we're growing it fast, I know what fast means and building means. See, to you, fast could be totally different to you and me. You're like, Yeah, man, I'm crushing it. Crushing what? Dude, I'm doing two deals a month. Listen, I'm not trying to be a dick, but you've been in the game six years and you think two deals a month is crushing it. You're delusional and/or you just don't have big dreams. [16:10.1]

See, listen, that is not big goals. That is not crushing it. If anything, you're crushing your dreams, not crushing the business. I know I might sound like a dick because I'm talking directly to you. If you're mad, it's not because you're mad at me. You know what I'm saying is the truth. I used to say the same bullshit. I remember when I was crushing it because I was working 16 hours a day, I was busting my tail, and yet ultimately why it was happening was I was doing all this work, but I wasn't making any more money. I was crushing hours, but I wasn't crushing revenue. See, “crushing it” are two different things. It means a lot of things to everyone.
What does it mean to you?

See, if I'm in business, the only thing that matters is making money. My business has to make money. If anybody tells you anything different, they're just sugarcoating things and lying to you. Now, don't get me wrong.
I obviously want to have a great team. I want to have a great product. Obviously, these things go hand in hand with making more money. I don't recommend having a shitty product and beating your team up to make a couple extra bucks. [17:09.3]

I'm talking, again, understanding what this means to me, core values first. This drives the vision, drives the revenue, etc. Understand what your words mean and you'll get a better result with your outcome. Not only that, you'll be so much more confident. When someone comes rolling up to me and they're like, Yo, man, I'm crushing it. Cool, what does that mean? I'm not being a dick. I genuinely want to know what they're talking about because I don't know.

“Mark, if you had nothing, if you're starting today from ground zero, what would you do?” It’s a stupid-ass question. Why? I'm not starting from ground zero. No one is. No one is. I have connections galore. I have relationship capital deeper than deep. I’ve been building it for 25 years with people, so no one is starting from nothing. I know what my resources are. I know my opportunities. I have so many things I could connect with if I had to start over that I would never have to start over. [18:06.8]

See, the difference is that we’ve got to know what these words mean, and I know what words mean to me and I still fall into this sometimes when I say stupid shit to myself. Thought-auditing will help you get out of this. Thought-auditing will help you understand when you say words, what they mean. “Man, I love you.” Cool. What does that mean? “Hey, I appreciate you.” Cool. What does that mean? Don't we want to know what this shit means really? Because it means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and I'm here to teach you how to get more financial wealth and family success with your time and energy and efforts.

“Yo, I'm prepared.” Prepared for what? “Man, I'm prepared for anything.” Cool. Someone's got a gun to your head. Now what? “Uh ….” Hey, cool, you can handle the gun position. Cool. Hey, your kid gets cancer, needs a million dollars to save their life. Are you prepared now? “Uh … maybe not so prepared.” See, prepared for what? See, if anything, I want you to over-prepare, not under-prepare. I'd rather have you overly successful than underly successful, if that even makes sense. [19:07.0]

I want you to step the game up. I want you to understand what your words mean. I want you to live the life of your dreams. I know you can. I know you will. I hope you are. But we all could use some tweaking here, me included. I'm constantly pushing on this all the time. I feel like I fail all the time. I get it. But when I say fail, I know what that means. I'm not failing as a loser. I'm failing forward. I'm driving a new vision. I'm learning something new today. When I fail, I learn. When you might fail, you might think, It's over. I've lost it all. I'm going to go bankrupt. I don't know what these words mean to you, but I know what they mean to me.

But, at the end of the day, I'm just sharing real insightful knowledge that's helped me get to the next level within and by the way, I’ve barely done shit for where I'm going, so it's not like I'm being cocky here. It's just I genuinely know, when I started understanding what the words I say mean, my life started getting better. I started getting more focused. I started getting more profitable. I started getting better people around me. I started learning how to get more confident through my efforts, because I knew what I was actually talking about for me. [20:10.0]

All I want to do is shine the light on and hope it helps you guys get your life, get your game, get your wealth to another level, and that's all. Today is a short day, a powerful day. Learn what your words mean. Write down the top 20, 30, 40, 50 words you're using daily, weekly, monthly. When you say a word, when it creates motion by the word, words have a lot of emotion tied to them. “Poor.” Ugh. “Rich.” Yay. “That's not me” There are identities inside of these words as well. There are so many reels that are playing from behind the scenes from maybe you've gone bankrupt once or twice or 10 times, I don't know, but when I say rich, it might mean something negative to you or positive to you or intermediate.

What I want you to do is start paying attention to your words. Keep me posted with what this means to you. This is huge, I'm telling you. It sounds so simple because it is, and yet it's so powerful and profound. It will change your life, change your future. [21:02.0]

I appreciate you guys being here. Hope you have an amazing day. Please, if this podcast has helped you, please share it on social. Hit me up on social. Tag me. Let me know what you're up to and if you need help on anything else.

Appreciate you guys. I'm just thinking about you. Have an amazing, amazing day. With that said, make it today count. Peace.
