Hey y'all and welcome to the everyday athlete podcast recorded live from Omaha, Nebraska and I'm your host, Katie danger U S army veteran and founder of Red H Nutrition providing everyday athletes just like you, clean, effective nutritional solutions, custom formulated to help you reach your absolute potential every single day.
26 Hello. Hello athletes' welcome. Welcome to episode number three of the everyday athlete podcast and I want to share with you a little something about me that's outside of the fitness realm before I get into the meat and potatoes of this episode. So I love Guinea pigs. I have had Guinea pigs since I've been eight years old. I am 34 now, so if you do the math, I have had Guinea pigs for a long time and I've had lots of them in my life and one thing that happens to them a lot is they can get some GI distress so their tummy gets upset and when that happens they need to be hand fed. Essentially we are giving them additional nutrition by feeding them this mash full of probiotics, vitamin C, and then concentrated pellets is supposed to help them get over this distress. So one of my Guinea pigs, his name is PD, he's currently not feeling very well, so I have had to supplement his diet twice a day with this mash with the probiotics and the vitamin C in it so we can hopefully get him over the hump and back to feeling better.
20 I need them to bounce back. So I've done this for many Guinea pigs before and the reason that I wanted to lead into this is because you cannot get everything that you need from food. And I believe that statement is incredibly false. Now I'm the owner of radiation nutrition. I sell micronutrition, I sell supplements. That is the product that I provide to the world because I believe they can help people live their life better. But one of the things that I always get told and really one of the biggest push backs that I get in terms of people not being interested in what we are doing here at reddish nutrition is that they can get everything that they need from whole food. That's what they'll tell me. Like I don't need supplements. I get everything I need from food. And I really, I want to address that false statement and I want to give you a few reasons why that's false and then what you can do to help get you more out of life, help you feel better.
16 Now when we everyday athletes go through life, we are pulled in so many different directions. We've got extra stress, we're overwhelmed, we've got other projects that we're doing. You know, it's not just about our fitness, the holidays are coming up. We have our families that we need to tend to, our kids, our spouses. And a lot of times when people think of supplementation, they think of really superficial things like pre-workout or protein or BCAs or even fat burners. So a lot of this comes off as snake oil because, well a lot of it out there is, but a lot of it is actually really, really good. And what we're doing here ready to nutritionist, we're bridging the gap between performance and wellness because as everyday athlete there is more to life than just that small component of time that you spend in the gym. There's so much more that happens outside of the gym that relates to your fitness, your nutrition, and your recovery.
13 Then that small time that you spend in the gym, and this is where that Holy grail of fitness and performance and enjoying and living your life better comes from. You cannot get everything you need from food when you believe that it compromises your ability to be the best that you can. It leaves you vulnerable, it leaves your whole system vulnerable to not be its best. And the whole goal of why I talk to you every week and why you listened to this episode is you can get actionable strategies. They're gonna help you live your life better. It's gonna help you optimize your life and not compromise any of your time. I want you to get every last drop out of your fitness and out of your 24 hours and every single day that you can. So here's one reason why you can't get everything you need from food.
01 Food today is just not as nutritionally dense as it used to be. This is comes from a lot of factors. The way that we cultivate our crops, the way that we cultivate our food and our livestock, the way that it's planted, the way that we prepare it, GMOs, fertilizers, all of those things play a part in why our food is not as nutritionally dense as it used to be. So get this, I pulled this study up cause I thought it highlighted my point here in 2004 a study from the department of agriculture, they pulled 40 excuse me, from 1950 to 1999 they looked at 43 different garden crops and they looked at the nutritional component of these six garden crops. And what they found is that they found statistically reliable decline. So these results were significant is what it's saying. They found significant results in the decline of six key nutrients, protein, calcium, potassium, iron, vitamin B, 12 and vitamin C. so there are legitimate declines and the nutritional value of our food.
07 So when you put that out there in the mix, to me, that is numero UNO reason why you're not getting everything you need from food. It just says right here, a 2004 study found there from 1950 to 1999 that were not getting the same amount of protein, calcium, potassium, iron B, two and vitamin C in our food as we used to. Also, we have a lot of, I'll call them fad diets because diets, they come and they go, they change a little bit, they get a new name. But when you're following one of these fad diets or these new protocols that are out there, you're not getting some of the key vitamins and minerals that you need to make sure that your body's cellular processes are functioning and firing on all cylinders. You can't be on your a game. So I want to talk about the carnivore diet.
53 If you're eating just animal products, just meat, you're missing few things. You're missing your fiber, you're missing your vitamin C, you're missing antioxidants, and this nutritionally compromises you. You cannot be your best if you do not have enough fiber in your diet. If you cannot keep your gut health high, it affects your mindset, your mood, your emotions, your motivation. So if you want to be the best you can be, you got to get your mind right. And that means taking care of your gut. And that means optimizing your nutrition for whatever plan you're following. So if you're a carnivore, find a way to get more fiber in your diet, keep yourself regular, get vitamin C. it's great for immunity, especially as we head into the colder months and antioxidants. Those are going to help scour the body, get rid of free radicals and help promote your work
38 hovering after your gym sessions or just day to day with whatever stresses life hands you ever heard the saying, failing to prepare is preparing to fail. A major component to your competitive success will be your nutrition prep. And I create a competition nutrition guide to help you utilize pre intra and post-competition nutrition protocols. Boost your confidence heading into a competition, recover quicker post comps. You get right back to training and increase your power output and max capacity so you can own that podium. I created this guy just for the everyday athlete and you can get your free
13 copy at competition, nutrition guide dogs.
16 I'll say again, competition, nutrition guide.top now. Yup, and be a vegan. There's also things that you're going to be missing. So if you're just eating
29 Lance and fruits, fruits and vegetables, you're going to be low in vitamin B 12 in fact, you're probably not going to have much in your body at all. The FDA recommends at least 2.5 micrograms of B 12 a day. And if you are eating a combination of animal products and other plants, beans, legumes, things like that, you're getting the B12 that you probably need. But if you're a vegan, you're not. So you've got to find a way to get B12. It is essential for new red blood cells and red blood cells help carry oxygen. They keep our tissues fed, they keep us alive, they keep our body oxygen Natus you've got to have B12. You're also not getting enough amino acids and protein to help prepare your muscles. So if you are an exerciser and you're a vegan, you have got to make sure that you're finding a protein source so you can get your amino acids, the building blocks of proteins you can recover, keep your body strong, keep it structurally stable, very, very important if you're a vegan to get B12 protein and those amino acids in.
26 And then the other, probably the most popular fad diet right now is Quito, the Keogh genic diet. And that's characterized typically by high fat, low carbs. So somebody who's following keto is eating a lot of of clean fats, animal proteins, high fiber plant proteins that are less rich in carbohydrates. They're basically staying away from fruits and then some vegetables. But you're also missing a lot. You're missing antioxidants. Those free radicals that help get rid of damaged in the blood and in the body. So you can recover quicker. You're missing key phytonutrients that come from plants. Fido nutrients from plants help repair your cells right down to that cellular level. That's where health starts. I mean we are the smallest components of the larger aspect of ourselves, so it only makes sense to take care of ourselves and make sure that our cellular recovery and that when our body goes through the repair process and replicate cells, that they come back stronger than they were before.
24 Fiber. If you're eating keto, you might not be getting the fiber that you need. And once again, I talked about this on the carnivore diet helps keep you regular. It slows digestion and prevents those sugar spikes and as insulin spikes and with Kito also you got to make sure you're getting probiotics and probiotics are key key microorganisms. Now they occur naturally in our gut already, but what they do is they help get rid of the bad bacteria in our gut. So our nutrient absorption is better. We aren't retaining our food or our fat. It gets flushed through the liver and then excrete it out. Probiotics are so essential to your health and wellness. So that is a whole nother aspect. If you're following a fad diet, you can see why you're not getting everything that you need from food and why micro nutrition supplementation is important.
12 And then the third aspect I wanted to hit on is let's be real. How many of you out there are actually getting all your veggies in for the day? How many of you're eating an Apple a day? Are you actually tracking your micro nutrition? We still often get caught up in macros counting our macros, our proteins, our fats and our carbohydrates. But there is so much more to your nutrition than just your proteins, your fats and your carbohydrates. I want you to ask yourself this question. If you happen to be somebody who does believe you are getting everything you need from food right now, if you could optimize your body, if you could optimize your fitness and be better and have better workouts, recover faster, not get sick, not let stress take its toll on your vulnerable body, would you pass up those opportunities? Because that is exactly what supplements are.
59 Supplements. My friends are opportunities for you to optimize your fitness and your wellness. I'm not just talking about pre-workouts, there's so much more than pre-workouts in the supplement world. So let's recap. Shall we? I want to tell you again why the statement I get, everything I need from food is false. It is false and you shouldn't believe it because it's just going to lead you down a road of suboptimal performance and recovery and you're not going to be living your life as good as you could. Food today is simply just not as nutritionally dense as it used to be. And I referred to that 2004 study performed by the department of agriculture. If you happen to be following a niche or a fad diet at the moment, like carnivore, vegan, Quito, or some combination of the above, you are missing key nutrients in your diet and you need to find a supplement that can help you get that full spectrum of wellness.
50 And number three, why would you pass on opportunity if it could help you be better if it was not snake oil and if it actually improved your performance? Why wouldn't you do it? Because let's be real. We all know that we're not getting all the veggies that we know we need to. I have yet to have a customer when I have asked them here in the store if they're getting all their veggies they need today and they look at me and they kind of put their head down a little bit and they're like, no I'm not. There is more than just the macros. Proteins, fats and carbs. They are great but there is so much more to life. Your micro nutrition is just as important. Those vitamins and minerals that help optimize those cellular processes cause that's where all the magic happens. All right you guys, that is all for episode three today.
