The commercial starts with a wide angle shot of ten pink bunnies banging bass drums. Each second another bunny dies and stops drumming. At the end, only one is left. You might remember the 1988 ad for Energizer batteries where the bunny keeps going, and going, and going. The idea was simple, if you want activate your gadgets and keep them going, you need an energizer.

The same holds true for our podcast. If we don't have the right power source, our audience will drop off like those inferior drumming bunnies. To activate our audience we need an energizer.

Today we'll talk about how The Audience Activator works to energize your audience and get them taking action on your offers.

I used to think the secret to having a thriving business was to have a big database.

I was wrong. Check out this quote from Darin Persinger, “A database gives you their info. An audience gives you their attention.” Most people think podcasting will bring them a massive audience of adoring fans. The problem is, if you don't already have an audience, who will listen to your podcast?

Podcasting is a tool to activate your existing audience.

Much like the energizer bunny is powered by batteries, our audience is powered by their connection with us. Even if we have a small audience, a podcast can deepen our connection and keep relationships growing. That's why we always tell our clients to forget about downloads and focus on feedback. You know your audience is activated when you hear them repeating the stories you tell on the show.

But how do we activate our audience with our podcast?

The secret to making a connection with our listeners starts before we record a single word. We have to know who this podcast is for, and what we want the podcast to do for us. When we're crystal clear on those two things we can make a powerful podcast that activates our audience and gets them to take action.

What kind of action do we want?

Another big mistake I see people make when starting a podcast is not knowing how they'll measure success. Before we start a show we want to know what we want our listeners to do. Do we want them to book calls? Visit our website? Buy our products?

Once we know what action we want our listeners to take we can setup KPI's (key performance indicators) that tell us whether or not our audience has been activated.

Audience Activation is a measurable event.

We need to understand that a podcast alone isn't an audience builder. Instead, a podcast is a tool that activates the audience we already have. Activation is measured by the number of listeners who take action on our offers. Setup KPI's to let you know if your podcast is meeting your objectives.

A podcast with no batteries?

Having a podcast without clear KPI's is like a drumming bunny without an energizer battery. It may work for a while, but eventually it will die out.

In today's article we talked about podcasting being a great tool for activating your audience. One of the biggest myths in podcasting is that it's a great source of leads. I recorded a short training that shows you why “Podcasts Sucks For Getting Leads” and what you should do instead. You can listen to it at https://thepodcastfactory.com/dwp016/
