Mark: Welcome to the Making DM podcast show. I'm your host, Mark Evans, DM and this is show number one of the new podcast show I'm doing here today. As I'm sitting here talking to you guys, first and foremost, I appreciate you being here. This means a lot to me as I have a lot of stuff I want to share with you guys, but let me set the stage here today. I'm talking to you from a park where they're getting ready to do a big horseshow, which is always fun and beautiful to see these amazing animals and the dedication of these trainers and the riders and all that. [0:01:00.6] Beautiful day, 78 degrees, sunny, thinking about how to make a bigger impact in the world.
The making of the DM kind of came about through many different ways, but DM means Dealmaker – or Dream Maker, if you're my mother. Think about how can we – you and I – understand that this other world exists. That's why you're here because you know there's more out there, but how can we take this information to make an impact not just in our lives but everyone's lives around us. So I commend you on taking this step. Maybe you're out there working out right now or doing whatever you do, I appreciate you being here.
You may hear some background noise, some birds chirping, some trucks moving. I'm trying to keep the background noise at bay as best as possible, but this is what deal making is to me: Being able to do what you love to do from anywhere you want to do it from. I'm not saying do nothing, get rich. I'm not saying do nothing and have people begging you to give you money, but what I'm talking about is making dreams happen, not just for yourself but others around you.
[0:02:06.0] But let me set the stage for you guys that are brand new here, and if this is the first time hearing me, again, I appreciate it. I've been doing business now for over 23 years. The truth is I've never had a real job my whole entire adult life, so I either killed it and ate or I didn't kill it and I don't eat, and that means a lot to me because there's a lot of people out there on Instagram and Facebook and all these social platforms acting like they're crushing it, and yet they all have full-time jobs and they're definitely not crushing much of anything except dreams of other people following them and not knowing what they're talking about.
But I grew up – I think you should kind of know who you're listening to – I grew up in a small town in Ohio about an hour east of Columbus, Ohio to be exact. I barely graduated high school, small town. When I say small town, I think I graduated with like 92 people. I was probably graduate 89 of 92. I barely graduated high school with a 1.8. College was never in my thought process. [0:03:00.2] I never thought about going to college. It never was appealing to me. I never understood the importance of it for me, and again, I think it's all coming to fruition 23 years later. Today, I'm 41 years old, it's July 2019 when I'm shooting this podcast show to you, and there is so much that has changed and so much that hasn't changed. As I go back to this small town, everyone is talking about the same people, doing the same silly shit, expecting different results.
And what I realized early in life is that I – me – am in 100% control of whatever I want, and whatever you've been dreaming of, whatever you've thought of, big or small, it's available to us, and I'll share stories throughout the podcast show over the years here, but I really do know and feel super blessed that I had the gene in me that said there is more out there because I think there is a lot of people that just don't believe there is; therefore, they just accept the life they've been dealt, and my parents are great people, amazing people. [0:04:01.4] Financially, we never had a lot of money, but they always had food on the table. They always, always showed up to every sporting event I ever had. I still am amazed at how that they did that. I have 2 siblings. We are all 13 months apart, which is amazing to me, and my parents are rather young. They had us at 18, 19, and 20. So my parents, I love helping them, and doing stuff. My father actually works in my real estate investment company. I own a pretty big media company as well, and I'm involving in a bunch of other companies as either a silent investor or participating in helping them grow their enterprise, but – I'm getting side tracked a little bit – and I'm sure with this show, that will happen often because I am ADHD all the way to Z. I do have a lot of things I want to share with you guys, real stuff, and some stuff will be hard to hear. You might hear it and not understand what I'm saying until a year or two years from now or hopefully you grasp it, knowing that I'm sharing this stuff with you to help you, not hurt you. I'm going to tell you want you need to hear, not what you want to hear.
But as I grew up in a small town in Ohio, 18 years old, I grew up wanting to make $100,000 a year. [0:05:05.1] That was my dream. I never knew anybody that did that. The only way I knew the path to do that would be through construction or trade hours for dollars, right? Trade my time for dollars? And, again, nothing wrong with that. That's how I grew up. So I started plotting. I worked 7 days a week, I worked 15 hours a day x$20 equals $300 a day x30 days is $9000 a month x12 months – boom! I hit my number. Again, my problem, and most people's problem, is not that I know, is not afraid of working, the problem is afraid of working on the wrong things.
So as I started doing this, and just working and working, I started figuring out what my unique or core abilities were, it took me many years to discover what I'm sharing with you, so I'm accelerating the conversation with you, but like, again, working, working, working… I was great at making money on jobs, but I was terrible at collecting. Sound familiar? I could do the work. [0:06:00.4] The guy says he's going to pay me, but then you've got to follow up with him. You've got to send him an invoice. You've got to collect the money. You've got to follow up with him again because he said he sent the check 3 weeks ago but you still haven't received it and on and on and on…
And I started asking myself, how can I focus on what matters because all this stuff matters, right? But for me, who can I hire to help me, and we've never been taught to hire people. In school, that's called cheating, right? I tried to learn how to hack the system and collaborate in English class. I was terrible in English, so I would collaborate – much of the teachers called that cheating – collaborate with people in class to get better grades. In math, it was easy for me. Math was a fairly simple subject matter for me – simple math that is. Once you start getting in crazy math like they do today, so it is getting more complicated, but as I started developing and understanding you've got to become a good listener; you've got to listen to yourself, most importantly; you've got to know where you're weak. You've got to acknowledge it, you've got to know where you're strong. You've got to acknowledge it. It's not bragging if you're actually doing it and you're doing it well.
[0:07:02.2] I just started taking stock, understanding what I was… what I wanted out of life and keep asking questions – and by the way, I'm still editing that. I now have 2 children. I have a 2-month-old daughter, I have a 3-1/2-year-old son, and a beautiful wife of 15 years. I've been with my wife for 15 years now, which is insane to me. It's a constant edit or what I like to call evolution process, and I hope you're on this journey with me forever. My intention here today is that we get to know each other. Obviously, right now, I'm just sharing my story with you, but I hope my story can make an impact in you, make your life easier, more profitable, more enjoyable, and gain some clarity where you're at and where you want to go and that's my only intention. I have nothing here to sell you. I'm not going to run ads anytime soon that I'm aware of, and, again, this is an evolution process. Maybe I do one day; maybe I don't. I'm not doing this for the money, clearly, because this is free. All I would ask is if this podcast show starts resonating with you, simply share it with a couple people that you care about in business and in life.
[0:08:03.7] Let them know, like, hey, this crazy guy at the DM is quirky, funny, goofy, can barely speak but yet he's coming from the heart, and I promise you that's where I'm coming from. I'm taking real life subject matters that I'm dealing with daily as well as I have a small mastermind group where I have 30 amazing men sitting in a room and just talking about real-life shit, about their business, their life, and everything in between, and health and all this stuff, and I just want to help make an impact, and that's why I'm here truthfully.
So with that said, I don't know everything. You might be coming here thinking, shit, I want to be here, I want someone who knows everything. No one knows everything. If they do, they're trying to sell you something. They're lying to you. I'm still learning every day. I mean today, it's about 1 o'clock in the afternoon, I'm sitting here talking to you. I mean, deals have fallen through. People have been hired. People have been fired. People are pissed off at me for whatever reason as a leader, I'm sure. [0:09:00.5] People are inspired by me as well, like everything else in between, but our job… My job is I want to be a better person every day. I want to learn. I want to grow. I want to be the best dad, the best son, the best brother, the best uncle, the best leader, the best… All this stuff, and I'm conscious of it, and I really do spend a lot of mindset time on it myself.
Like I said, I own multiple companies. Real estate investment is probably one of the biggest ones I'm known for. I've written 9 books in that space, best sellers, sold a lot of books with all the money going to charity, which is always awesome, but for me, dealmaker, like I said, means dealmaker and then dream maker. Let's talk about what dealmaker really, really means to me and kind of how it came about.
So dealmaker… I've always kind of been a dealmaker, if you will. My buddies used to call me Dr. Money or Dealmaker or whatever, and they're like, Evans, you always can figure out a way to turn something into good. [0:10:00.8] And I really think the real truth of that is, the reason is, because I see the good in everything, right? If someone gets hit in front of me, I'm like, damn, they're so lucky they didn't die – not like, oh my God, they're hurt, what do we do? Obviously that's going to happen by osmosis, but I see the good. When shit happens to me, bad stuff, I'm like, damn man, that's not that bad, it could be way worse – I'm alive, I have my mind, I can live on tomorrow and figure it out tomorrow and get better. So it's all about perspective and understanding how you see it, so deal making to me is deal making with yourself, understanding that every day you set a deal. Some people call it confidence, right? They're like, I'm going to wake up at 4:44 every morning. Well, that's a deal you make with yourself and you've got to be a dealmaker to make that a reality, and you wake up at 4:44, and you either move forward or you lay back down in bed.
We all do both, but if you keep constantly focusing on this deal you've made with yourself, this confidence really starts building internally for you every day, every moment I make a deal. [0:11:03.1] I'm going to make 10 calls a day. If you make 9, you feel like shit; if you make 10 or 11 or 12 or 20, you feel amazing, and you compound that over year after year, day after day, some amazing, amazing things start happening as well as the opposite. If you don't stick to your deal making that you're making yourself, the opposite is going to take place. You're going to have bad experiences. You're going to hurt yourself financially, most of you physically, emotionally… It's going to be process, it's going to be a problem. So know that deal making works on both sides, just like momentum and dream making.
All this stuff is awesome to have – the houses, the cars, the watches… I have all that stuff, whatever, and I like it. I really do like it a lot. I buy them all the time but it's not what defines me. It's stuff I like. It's stuff I've worked really hard to get, stuff I've dreamed about that means something to me, not just like, oh, I can show off. [0:12:02.4] The truth is, most people will never even see half the shit I have because I don't even show it except to my wife and my kids, and we hang out. So dream making and deal making to me is being able to hang out with who I want, when I want, and there are times, listen, in my business, once a week, I have to talk with CFOs and accountants and all that fun stuff that I don't enjoy, but that's part of the process. That's the deal I made with myself. I have to get better at that. If I get better at that, everything else gets better. It's not fun, everything I’m talking about, it's not all about the only thing I do is the stuff I enjoy. That would be the biggest lie ever. The truth is, most of the shit I do, I hate! I hate! I don't want to do it but the purpose is bigger than the process. See when I start feeling like I hate a lot of the stuff, and I don't take action on it, it's because I've lost sight of the purpose or the intention of what I wanted to do.
This show, for example, straight up, this is something I've been talking about for 3 years – 3 years! And I finally just woke up one day and said enough is enough. I made the deal with myself that I will commit to you guys for the next 10 years. [0:13:02.3] The purpose became bigger than the process. Hire the right guy, the team to help me deploy this out to you guys. I'm simply recording on a handheld thing. I'll upload it into a system, and boom, it gets pushed out because I made a deal with myself.
And that to me is deal making, dealmaker. Let me paint the picture even a little bit broader. It took me 9 years to figure out some of the stuff I'm going to share with you. I hope I can accelerate your growth in what you're trying to accomplish in many levels, but I'm a non-day-to-day owner. I own multiple companies. I have people that run them. I am involved in them. I'd be crazy not to because I actually love what I do in those companies. I love what they produce, I love who they're employing. I care about my employees greatly, my team. I don't even call them employees but my team members. I work for them, they don't work for me at the end of the day. I work for them. I've got to be a better leader. I've got to get them better leads. I've got to get them better product. I'm thinking about that every day. [0:14:00.2] I'm trying to figure out how to pay them more and let them have an amazing life because there is nothing better than waking up, watching your team grow and develop with you, seeing them buy their dream cars, their dream houses, take those dream vacations. To me, that's what this is about. I'm getting excited talking about it even, but as I'm sitting here, since 12/31/2005, I departed my real estate company. I left. I went on a 1-month vacation that turned into literally – when I say vacation, vacation to me, again, is in context that means being able to leave and still working on the company. I love working on the company, not necessarily in it as much, but I love working on it. So people who take vacations typically are running from something. I'm not running from anything except myself, trying to figure out how to detach myself to grow something bigger than me, and as an entrepreneur, what I've realized most of us have a tendency to get in and mess things up, really like to tinker with stuff that doesn't need tinkered, focus on things that don't need focused on, by breaking systems and creating a Superman effect, if you will, right? [0:15:04.1] Like, you bottleneck things, they have to come to you because it makes you feel good, things get done at the 11th hour that should have never got that far, but you stepped in, and you saved the day, if you will. Well, that's very, very bad business. I did that for 9 years, and it hurt a lot of people, me included, and plus a lot of great people got beat up emotionally, and they left me for good reason. They should have. I was a very immature, amateur business owner – well, I was playing business. I wasn't in business at that time.
So as I'm sitting here talking to you, I have people all over the world, most in the US that are buying and selling property for me. I have people that are deploying in the media company in Florida, like we have a lot of people in that company, a lot of emails are going out. We're touching a lot of people's lives, helping a lot of companies grow and develop, and in the real estate thing, I've really took a chest-to-chest company and business and turned it into something a little bit different. People call it virtual investing, and I kind of coined that term. [0:16:03.5] I don't even know if I coined it. It wasn't even a term when I was doing it. It was from afar.
So I'm very conscious of my activities. I'm very thoughtful or meaningful, the TNT, thought on the thought, and we'll talk about that in later episodes, but what do you want? And I don't care what show you listen to, this podcast show or other podcast shows or reading or whatever, you have to intentionally step in with what the fuck do you want? What do you want this to look like? What do you want to gain from us or me, if you will, because this is my show? What do you want to gain? Clarity? Insightfulness? Thoughtfulness? Positive attitude? All of the above? But if you go in with intentions, typically you're going to get better results, and that's what this is about to me, is I want you to get results. I don't want you just to be here to listen, get excited, and do nothing. I want you to get excited to know that you're not alone. We're all crazy, some are just crazier than others. [0:17:01.7] That's a fact, but yet we're here for a reason. I don't think you downloaded this podcast show, and you're listening to it wherever you're at, by accident. I truly do believe everything – everything – happens for a reason, good or bad, and as you're sitting here listening to this, I'm thinking who are you? What do you do? What do you look like? What are your functions? What are you trying to accomplish? And I believe that you know that there is more out there or you would not be here.
So as we navigate together, I would love for your feedback. "Hey, Mark, I really love this topic, can we dive deeper on it?" It's a 2-way communication. I don't see this podcast show ss me talking to you but talking with you, and I do mean that. It actually makes my life easier if you're giving me feedback because then I can come in and answer your questions because that's why I'm here, to answer your questions.
The DM is what deals are you making with yourself? Health-wise? Recently, over the last 120, 130 days, I made a deal with myself to get in better shape, and it's paying off in spades. [0:18:01.2] I feel better. I look better. I'm clear-headed. I haven't drank alcohol… that's the first time in many, many, many years for 120, 130 days… I just feel better, and if I feel better everything else gets better. Just go figure, right?
I got sloppy. I lost track of the purpose. I have an amazing, beautiful family. I want to be around forever, and I want to be around and conscious. I want to be healthy. I want to be chasing my son around when I'm 55 years old and not in a wheelchair. That's like a real concern of mine, for real. I had to sit down and get real with myself. Mark, what do you really, really want, and not just bullshit talk what I want, but what do I really, really want, and what am I willing to do to get it?
Again, back to the statement, whatever you want is available. Good or bad. Whatever you want, and every decision you make or don't make will get you closer or further away from that. This is the truth. If you want a better relationship, there are strategies and paths to get better relationships. [0:19:00.1] If you want better business, you've got to start building a different level of business building techniques and learning how to be a better leader. This is stuff we all can do. The beautiful thing, we live in a world – this is actually a catch-22 piece – but information and knowledge is available at your fingertips. You're listening to this probably on your cell phone or your computer or on your TV even, so anything you want to learn about is available to you. It's not about learning though, it's about implementing what you learn to get results. So my job in my mind is how can I help you get out there and get started? Start seeing some positive feedback, and then start getting excited about that and compounding that over time?
You and I are, we're going to make friends today, but the real magic is in the longevity play. The truth is I'm a hard-core relationship guy. You can follow me and see everyone I'm rolling with I've known for many, many years, and because I care about relationships, I think relationships is one of the best things in the world to grow me as well as them and what we're really trying to grow together. [0:20:03.4] I'm not transactional that much at all, like I don't enjoy just making a transaction to make more money. I'm past that stage of my life, if you will. I want the money. I don't need the money but I want the money if I can only serve the individual that we're extracting money from, because I'll give them my money just like I want them to give me their money, but it's got to be a service, there's got to be something of value.
I'm very clear about that. I don't care about that. I care about how do we help each other? How do we help you grow? How do I get you, like get these pieces in place? To give you the tools to be successful? And as we grow this, deal making is a big deal. You're not going to be 100% perfect. No one is. I'm not. I don't know anyone that's 100% perfect. I want to quit every other day. I get massive anxiety often. I always say if you're not dry heaving and about to go to the hospital because you're thinking you're having a heart attack, you're probably not doing enough.
[0:21:00.1] And, again, I don't know if that's healthy or not but that's me, and I'm not here to impress anybody but to impress upon that this shit is real. I know that through… by building these companies – and guys, by the way, I've done nothing. I've accomplished nothing to where I'm going. I'm just getting started and I'm 23 years' deep. I'm just getting started. It took me 9 years to figure out even what the hell I wanted to do and stand for. Then there was this evolution process. So if you're newer in business, don't get frustrated by watching what I have going on or someone else has going on, pay attention to you because you are the only thing that matters at the end of the day for what you're trying to accomplish.
Now don't get me wrong. It's cool to watch maybe what I’m doing to get inspired by that, but don’t derail yourself by thinking you can get to where I'm at overnight. That's not going to happen, and the truth is, I'm going to wake up tomorrow and be somewhere different potentially, right? So it's a false piece of where you might be trying to get to. You might think that's where you want to go but you've got to evolve. You might have different unique abilities than I do. You might have different financial rules than I do. I'm not here to make money. [0:22:00.6] You might be here to make money. There is no right or wrong to this. It's just, if you're following me, trying to figure out how to turn this into a profitable podcast show or whatever, I'm not your guy because I'm not here to make money.
The same thing with these horses. I’m out here watching all these amazing horses. If you're out here trying to figure out how to breed horses and make millions of dollars or whatever, and these guys are all charity cases, and they have lots of millions of dollars, if not billions of dollars already, it is very hard to compete in that environment because, well, you're competing against nobody because they're not trying to turn into a profit generator. They're just trying to do it as a fun activity.
So I want you to make a deal with yourself. If you continue listening to this show just know that I'll be here to serve you. I'm not just saying that to be lip service. I'm being dead serious. I want to help you. I'm not for hire. I do consulting maybe twice a year, one-day consults. It is very expensive, tens of thousands of dollars for 6 hours, and I don't even… It's not even enjoyable to me because it's like trading time for dollars. [0:23:04.4] I'd rather help you here for free, truthfully. It's why I'm doing this show. I get asked so many times a day, "Hey, man, what about this? What about that? What about this?" So instead of answering one-on-one to try to do as much as possible, I'd rather have a global conversation because, again, my purpose is bigger than individual. It is also how do we do it globally but also touch individually at the same time.
And my deal with myself is that I will dedicate to you guys. I will be here. And, again, I'm not going to tell you what you want to hear all the time; probably more often than not. I'm not going to tell you what you need to hear, but I will be honest. I will be sincere. I'll tell you the good, the bad, the ugly, and everything in between because doing this shit is not easy, but listen, what's the alternative? I'm unemployable. I've never had a job in my entire adult life. Not to say I wouldn't, but why? I've been put on this earth to do something different, and I'm not judging. It is what it is. I want to help you. I want to be there for you.
[0:24:01.4] But as where I come from, a small town in Ohio, like I said, my mentality is to work, and you'll hear me talk about this over the next podcast shows in the future, about the magician versus the mule, about the 4 x 4 effect and all that, and I challenge you to listen to them and really understand where this is coming from and why I'm sharing it with you. So many people are hurt out there, trying to be so much bigger than they need to be and yet getting less results more and more every day. It's now about working harder. It's about working hard and being smart at the same time. It's an evolution process. It's evolving and my goal is to turn every single person I talk to - I don't care who you are and what you do - into a dealmaker to yourself. Make a deal with yourself, stick to it, enjoy life to the fullest. Not every day is easy but who says it's going to be easy, and by the way, it's not easy sitting at home getting fat and disgusting and unhealthy because you're going to pay for it in the future.
[0:25:00.8] You know you're capable of so much more. We all are. I think right now today, I'm doing okay. I have a couple new books coming out. I have this podcast coming out. I have a big… team's growing and things are happening. I might be playing at 25% of capacity, and that's the truth, and I'm conscious of that, but I'm not posting on line, saying I'm doing all these big things and nothing is happening. The truth is, most of the time, I don't even post anything because I'm too busy actually doing the work with my team.
I want you to start thinking about what do you really want? Not what does Mark want? What does this guy want? Not what does this lady want? What the fuck do you want? That's a real question. I believe… The whole reason I'm coming out with this podcast show, I think… I don't think, I know for a fact, we're in an identity crisis of massive, massive issue. You're watching all these Instagrams and all these Facebooks and all this stuff online, TV shows, you don't even know what the hell you want. You're bouncing around idea to idea to idea; you're getting further and further in debt; you're not creating anything at all except problems. [0:26:09.2] You're never… Even if you got what you want, you don't even know you got it because you don't even know what the fuck you want. That's real talk. It's easy to get lost, right? You watch these Instagram stories and you see micro moments, literally 15-second clips of someone in front of a cool car or nice watch or cool house or smiling family, and yet they're about to get a divorce; this guy is out cheating on his spouse every day. If he doesn't own the car, he rents the car for the pictures or it's his buddy's care, it's not his mansion, it's his friend's mansion… I could go on and on. This is real shit.
And yet we see those micro moments. We think, I want that, I want that… Oh, I want this now, oh, that's bigger, I'll take that one. When does it stop? Really, what do you want? I personally am here because I want more time freedom. The money will come. Money is back and forth. Time, once it is gone, it is gone, my friends. [0:27:01.5] It is gone. How many people do you know you'd give everything you have to see them for another day, for another hour, to tell them the things you've been wanting to tell them that you never got a chance to tell them. How much would you give for that?
See, when you really know what you want, you're willing to do whatever it takes. That's what I love about getting clear and having massive clarity on what you want. Do you want time? Do you want a better family? Do you want better health? Do you want a better business? And until we can define these things, we'll never feel like we're being productive. I get lost as well, still. Don't get me wrong. This happens to everybody. And the truth is, I just accomplished a big event, one of the biggest events I've ever had, and now I'm like, damn, what do I want to do next? Then I see some guys doing these bigger ones, and I'm like, shit, I can do bigger!
But do I really want that? I don't know the answer yet. Honestly, I don't know the answer, but yet, these are questions I'm having, my thought on my thought. [0:28:01.5] Yes, it's cool. Yes, it would make me feel good, but I've got to take time away from my family. I’m really chasing time. You know, yes, I want to do this, but do I really need more money, do I need the headaches, do I need to hire 4 more people, do I want to even do it? I don't know the answer yet, and I'm not acting like you need to know all these answers, by the way – yet. But before you can get really down on yourself and know if you're getting further or closer to your goals, you have to know where you're going and you have to make these deals with yourself to get there. That event I did, I sat down with my wife and said, Hon, I'm going to have to dedicate a lot of time to this. It's a big event, and, again, I have a pretty cool lifestyle. I don't have to really work. I want to work. I don't have to be on the phone much, but I want to be on the phone because I love talking to people and connecting with them and understanding where they're at and helping them to get to where they want to go, and yet, I sat down and said, I need to… I'm going to take away some time, are you cool with that? That's a real talk I had with her. [0:29:00.7] It's not that I don't love you guys, the truth is I'm doing it because I do love you guys.
So to me, what I'm saying, is back in the day, my immature person, me, I would just do it and then my personal life would suffer because I wasn't having a conversation. All this stuff we're talking about are conversations with ourselves or with others. Communication is key, and we had the talk, and it was cool. She saw my side of it, she understood where I'm going with it, and I tried not to get too crazy with it. These are things that we need to develop and talk about because I don't see anybody talking about this shit. They're all talking about tactical stuff, how to grow a business through a funnel. What the dipshit? Like, anybody can do that, by the way! So if anybody can do it, why aren't they all rich? Why don't they all have all this time? Why aren't they all living like this amazing life that they've been dreaming about? Why are they more depressed than ever? Why do they have less money than they've ever had? Why are they more confused than…?
It doesn't make sense to me, but actually it does because of what I said here. [0:30:01.3] They have an identity crisis. What do you want? What does your ideal day look like? What are you willing to trade to get X, Y and Z? Because there are tradeoffs on all this stuff. If anybody tells you there is not, again, they're lying or selling you something.
Probably one of the things I'm pissed off most about is I wrote a book called Virtual Investing Made Easy. This is 2007, 2008, or something like that. The book has sold thousands of copies, and yet, people think that they do nothing and get rich. The book wasn't meant to do that. It was more meant to be a mindset shift to share with people how they could build a business, not just a job. See, a lot of people listening here, you think you have a company. You have a job, working for a psycho, that psycho being you. That's the truth. I was the same guy, and sometimes I still fall back into that, because I love to make myself miserable because I can step up and do something about it, then I piss the team off, and then they yell, I yell, and then we move on! [laughter]
[0:31:05.4] But again, what do you want? I personally like waking up early morning, getting a nice workout in, beating up the sun by far. Wakey-wakey 4:44, if you follow me. You know that's a real thing. I like to think about me. I like to invest in me. Time and me. Maybe you like to stay up late? Again, there's no right or wrong to this shit. The only wrong is not doing it. What do you want?
I like to do amazing trips with my family. That takes money, by the way – mostly. Not all, but most. I'm talking like memorable trips. I'm not talking staying in Howard Johnson and being at the beach, walking 14 blocks to get to the water. I'm talking about staying at the best hotel, the best resorts or whatever. That's what I like. I'm not saying that's what you need to like, but they didn't build these amazing resorts for nobody. They built it for us, for people that want more. [0:32:01.8] If you've never been at a Four Seasons or something of that effect, then you haven't lived yet! [laughter] Truthfully! Make it a deal with yourself to fly first class. I got a great article and that I'll put on the website. Read it and understand the mindset behind it. It's not flying first class. It's about the mindset to get to first class. How you do one thing is how you do everything.
Whatever you're doing now, you're capable of so much more. What's your unique abilities as Dan Sullivan's calls it? I call it core abilities. What are you trying to really build? Not talking about it but really doing it. You're going to have some hard times. You better have a bigger purpose than making money because there are going to be moments even if you're making money, you're going to be losing money. It's called growth. You're going to have to understand what you're made of, what you're capable of, who's around you and why they're around you.
And as we start deal making, not just with us, with ourselves, but other people, our word is everything. [0:33:03.7] Our word is everything. To ourselves and others. So I am going to leave you off with this because I don't want this to be too long and just drawn out because I have a lot of stuff to share with you, and as we're on this journey, I want you to know I'm here for you, I'm rooting for you. You have to raise your hand. You've got to let me know what you need help with. You've got to keep the conversation moving forward. I'm only one person. There are millions of people that will listen to podcast shows so please just reach out. If I don't get back to you overnight it's not because I don't want you or love you, it because maybe I didn't see it or maybe I have 5000 other people in a queue. I don't know yet, but I do know I'll make every effort to connect with every single person. That's my intention, truthfully deep down, because that's what I do. I like to connect.
I want you to figure out what you want. This doesn't happen overnight but it starts today. Grab a piece of paper, just start writing. I want more money. [0:34:00.5] I want a better life. I want more time. I want a better company. I want to get out of a partnership. I want… Like, what do you want? In a nonjudgmental process, you have to sit down and start evolving – this is a muscle, but the way. I'm still working on it. I'm still evolving. That's what this show is about, evolution, evolvement. You've got to get involved to evolve.
And as we do this, we're going to look up, wake up 5 years, 10 years from now… That's the goal at least. We're either going to be closer to where we want to be or further away. My goal with the DM, how to become the making of the DM, I want you to know, it's not just a name, it's a life. Dealmaker is a real thing. We're moving, we're growing, we're driving, we're pushing, we're prodding. We're learning about ourself, we're learning about the market, we're learning about others. [0:35:01.1] We're constantly evolving, and my goal is to be here many, many, many years later with you, sharing high-level shit that helps get you to where you want to go, but before we can do that, I need to know where you want to go. What do you want? What are you willing to really commit to get what you want? I might not be the loudest, I might not be the coolest, I might not be the most eloquent person but I can promise you I'm here for you in a nonjudgmental, very direct manner. If you ask, I won't beat around the bush, I won't pussyfoot around to make you feel good. I'm going to tell you what you need to hear to move you forward. That's my commitment to you.
So as you're here at the making of the DM, I ask you this: Invest time in yourself. Find that 15, 20, 30 minutes or more where you can have alone time. Go hide out in the bathroom, if you have to. Most people don't bug you in there that much. [0:36:00.6] Shut the door. Get your notebook. Start writing. Turn off Instagram stores, turn off Facebook. What do you want? What do you want to be known for? You and I are going to die. Period. There is no other way out. Some are going sooner than others. Are you leaving it all on the table? Or are you hiding it because you're afraid of what people are going to think about you? They're judging you, they're laughing at you, they're telling you there is no way that is possible, this, that and all that other bullshit.
Know one thing. That says more about them than it does about you. Just because other people have given up on their dreams and goals and/or don't even know the shit we're talking about even exists, take it for what it's worth. It means nothing. It holds zero weight. Unless… This is a like a 400-pound person telling you, you need to lose weight and get in better health and they're telling you how to do it. This is like the broke person that tells you how to get rich. What the fuck does that even mean? If they knew, why wouldn't they be where they're telling you to get? [0:37:02.4] It only holds so much weight.
I want you to know, you're not alone. I'm here for you. Let's put a flag in the ground today and know that we are moving forward. I'll commit to you once a week to come here with the heat, the real shit, the real talk, and the making of the DM. I'll see you on the other side – go out and kick ass now! Have a great day.
